Our History
HARBEL COLLEGE
The Act that established Harbel College as a public institution of higher learning was approved and signed into law by H.E Madam Ellen Johnson –Sirleaf, President Republic of Liberia in 2012. The Legislation was sponsored at the National Legislature by former Margibi County District #2 Representative Hon. Ballah G. Zayzay, as part of the government’s higher Education decentralization plan. At the time of its formation, Harbel College was the fourth Public Institution of higher learning in Liberia, following the establishment of Nimba Community College (now Nimba University), Grand Bassa Community College (now Grand Bassa University), and Sinoe Community College.
Harbel College began academic activities in 2014 with preparatory courses for high School graduates and potential students using a Firestone owned facility under an interim management team headed by Prof. Dwede D. Hoto (Firestone Liberia Superintendent of Schools), while the campus was under construction. In 2015, after the appointment of Dr. Syrulwa Somah as its first President, the College began to offer courses leading to the bachelor’s degree in programs in three schools: Agriculture, Engineering and Education. Harbel College also began offering certificate programs in its school of Professional Studies immediately after the appointment of the president. In April 2021, the College held its first commencement program with 26 graduates; and the institution launched the J. Emmanuel Nuquay School of Business Administration at the ceremony.
In 2023, H.E. George M. Weah former president of the Republic of Liberia appointed a new management Team to the College, headed by Assistant Professor, Dr. Joseph D. S. Boldar for one year. Subsequently, with the approval of the Board of Trustees chaired by Rev. Moth. Louise G. Reeves, several new Schools were added to the College: Liberal Arts, Development Studies, and Health Sciences. During the same period, a Bill to repeal the 2012 Act which established the College, and to create a university was introduced in the Liberian Legislature by Margibi County District #2 Representative Hon. Ivar K. Jones.
MARGIBI UNIVERSITY
On August 9, 2024, the President of Liberia, H.E Joseph N. Borkai signed into law an Act which repealed the Harbel College Charter; and created Margibi University. given the institution a university. On September 29, 2024, President Boakai appointed Dr. Joseph T. Isaac as first President of Margibi University. The new Charter proposed the following six Colleges, with the creation of additional colleges with the approval of the Board of Trustees:

College of Natural Sciences

The University aspires to become an advanced research institution with an applied relevance curriculum for national capacity building. The strength, reputation and vitality of the University are embodied in its commitment to academic excellence, and quality faculty, many of whom are Fulbright Scholars, authors, well-known creative artists, and recognized experts in their fields. The University is geographically located uniquely on 20 acres in suburban Margibi County, a few minutes from Roberts International Airport, and approximately 31 miles from Monrovia. Margibi University is the newest niche-oriented public higher education institution in Margibi County. MU offers academically rigorous, comprehensive, and applied relevance-based degree programs.
ACCREDITATION
Margibi University is accredited by the National Commission on Higher Education of the Republic of Liberia (NCHE). The University is also member of the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMD), and member of Association of Liberian Universities (ALU).
